Research Data Things 1/23

I'm not committing to complete all the things, but it sounds like an interesting exercise and allows 34 weeks to complete.

ANDS - 23 Research Data Things

I've read the article, checked out the CSIRO Data Access Portal and the RCSB Protein Data Bank to get a feel for different types of research data and how they might be accessed and presented.

One of my experiences with research data is associated with a paper I co-authored. We collated data associated with libraries' use of Instagram looking for trends in use and what worked best for engagement with communities. We mapped the locations of the libraries. Spreadsheets, anonymised survey responses and Google map files have been shared via our institutional research repository.
It took quite a while to make sure that we had collated everything while preserving the anonymity of survey repsonses. Managing versions of spreadsheets and tracking what assumptions we made in categorising images etc added to the complexity.

The perfect storm: The convergence of social, mobile and photo technologies in libraries (data set).

Using the research data management toolkit provided by the Library was a great help in getting this set organised.
