The National Archives of Australia has developed and released an open source application to assist in long term preservation of digital records.
In a nutshell, it detects file formats and converts (normalises) files into open formats. Open formats are based on open standards, are community developed, have multiple applications that use those formats and have no licensing constraints on the use of the format.
It requires Java Runtime Environment and openOffice 2.x
