Pre VALA 2006

This week I'm attending VALA 2006 - a conference on the use of technology in libraries. I'm hoping to post a few comments on some of the sessions to this blog.

It's 8.15am in the internet cafe area and I'm the only one here using the internet while all around me the trade exhibits are being set up. I had a great flight down from the Gold Coast (to Melbourne) yesterday and managed to stack a few zeds.

I attended a cocktail party hosted by Ex Libris Australia, where they demonstrated their new search interface product - Primo. It incorporates features seen elsewhere (people who read this, also read; tagging; Did you mean?), incorporates SFX and searches across a number of sources. How this will fit amongst their other products will be interesting to see eg. Metalib.

Melbourne is much cooler than expected but a top of 35 degress is forecast for today. It was pretty cool on the walk here. But weather is fine and with daylight saving the city views can be enjoyed until around 9.00pm.

The conference is located in Crown Casino, right next to the Yarra River.

OK - I'm off to get a coffee. More later.
